Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Vanuatu

5:53 am on 10 March 2012

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Vanuatu and New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands just after 8pm on Friday.

The US Geological Survey says the quake's depth was 36km and was centred 60km northeast of Isangel in Vanuatu and 324km northeast of Tadine in New Caledonia.

The Pacific Tsunami Centre in Honolulu says there is no threat of a widespread tsunami.

However, it says earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coast within 100km of the quake's epicentre.
