The top fundraiser for the British Conservative Party, which leads the governing coalition, has resigned after being secretly filmed offering access to the prime minister in exchange for a large donation.

The Sunday Times newspaper says it recorded Conservative Party co-treasurer Peter Cruddas during a meeting earlier this month saying donors who contribute £250,000 could influence discussion on policy at the Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing Street.

The BBC reports it was footage of him apparently making the offer to undercover reporters.

The Conservative Party says no such donations were ever accepted.

Mr Cruddas provided a statement saying he deeply regretted any impression of impropriety he might have given.
