French police conduct raids

7:57 pm on 4 April 2012

Police in France have conducted new raids on suspected Islamist militants in the wake of the multiple killings by a Toulouse man, Mohamed Merah.

At least eight people were arrested on Wednesday as police carried out operations in a number of cities.

Thirteen people arrested in raids last week are facing terrorism charges.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed to crack down on suspected militants after the Merah killings last month.

The self-confessed al-Qaeda gunman was shot dead by police in Toulouse, following attacks in which he murdered seven people, including three children.
