Permanent relocation considered for some Fijians

Fiji's Disaster Management Office says permanent relocation is being considered for some people who live in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The confirmed death toll from the flooding, which hit the Western Division and parts of the Central Division, last week is five and about 2,000 thousand people are still in evacuation centres.

Disaster controller Inia Seruiratu says a long term plan for some residents is still being worked on and will have to be signed off by the military Government.

He says conditions have improved and some Fijians many able to return to their homes.

Mr Seruiratu says health officials are checking homes to make sure they are habitable.

Most schools, he says, are now open.
