Date set for Greek election

9:23 am on 12 April 2012

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos of Greece has called an early general election for 6 May.

Mr Papademos says he has asked the president to dissolve Parliament, but his government will remain in office until the election to ensure urgent reforms are pushed through.

The election is likely to be dominated by the International Monetary Fund's demand for further strict austerity measures.

Last year's bailout led to drastic spending cuts and riots.
