Air points donated to ex RAF pilot for London trip

A mystery benefactor in Australia is donating air points to get a veteran RAF fighter pilot and his wife from their home in Nelson, New Zealand, to a memorial service in London.

There is so much support for pensioner John Beeching, who flew in the Bomber Command, that other RAF veterans might be able to go too.

Mr Beeching lost half his mates during the World War II and this will be his final tribute to them.

He says half a dozen ex Bomber Command fliers living in New Zealand have been excluded from this official delegation to London in June because they flew with the RAF, not the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

However, about two dozen people offered to pay all or part of the fares in letters to the Nelson Mail on Wednesday.
