4:32 pm on 20 May 2012

The government in Myanmar says president, Thein Sein, has ordered the army to stop attacking the ethnic Shan rebels, active in the northern Kachin Province, near the Chinese border.

The BBC reports the order came as the army joined negotiations between the military-backed government and the rebels for the first time.

The army is continuing to attack the rebels of the Kachin Independence Army.
