Prison sentence for 1987 murder

A New Zealand man has been sentenced to prison for up to 14 years for murdering his girlfriend in Sydney more than two decades ago.

Grant Mitchell, 62, pleaded guilty in March to murdering Nella Poli, 19, in her home in May 1987.

Her body was found by a neighbour and her mother after she failed to turn up for work.

Mitchell turned himself in to police in North Queensland in January last year, saying he was wanted for murder.

In the New South Wales Supreme Court on Friday, Justice Peter Hidden accepted Mitchell was genuinely remorseful for his crime, noting his guilty plea and surrendering himself to police was consistent with that.

The ABC reports Mitchell will be eligible for parole in 2021.
