Rufus the hawk returns to Wimbledon

9:44 pm on 2 July 2012

Rufus the hawk - the scourge of pigeons at Wimbledon - has been found safe and well after being kidnapped.

Since arriving at the grassy courts of the All-England Lawn Tennis Club in London in 1999, the highly trained Harris hawk has proved a very environmentally-friendly kind of pest control, stopping pigeons doing what they do by scaring them off.

Last Thursday evening, in the middle of the current tennis tournament, thieves snatched Rufus in his box from the back of a car.

However, it appears the bird was too much to handle for whoever stole him and Rufus was handed into the offices of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, AFP reports.

Owner Imogen Davis says she is glad to have him back.
