More asylum seekers reach Christmas Island

1:02 pm on 2 July 2012

Another boat carrying asylum seekers arrived near Christmas Island on Sunday night.

The Australian federal government says the 39 passengers will be transferred to the island for health, identity and security checks.

Another boat was intercepted north-west of Christmas Island on Wednesday. Initial reports suggested there were 100 people on board.

The ABC reports the asylum seeker issue is expected to dominate talks Prime Minister Julia Gillard is having with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia in Darwin on Monday.
