Cholera in Cuba

1:27 pm on 8 July 2012

A patient has been diagnosed with cholera in Havana, Cuba, after three people died in an outbreak in the town of Mazanillo, more than 750km from the capital.

The BBC reports more than 50 people were infected and about 1000 have received medical attention.

The source of the disease is not clear, but people are reported to have taken ill after drinking water from contaminated wells.

The Health Ministry said the last reported cholera outbreak on the island was soon after the 1959 Revolution.
