First Olympic competitors arriving

9:50 pm on 16 July 2012

With the opening ceremony of the Olympics just 11 days away, the first athletes and officials have begun arriving in London.

On their way to the Olympic Village, they will be able to use the first of the controversial Olympic games traffic lanes from which all other vehicles have been banned.

Heathrow Airport is preparing to process about 10,000 extra passengers a day for this time of the year, in all 120,000 daily.

Questions remain about recruitment of security staff by security company G4S, which failed to recruit enough staff.

A total of 3500 troops are being drafted in to plug gaps.
