Trade funding for Pacific

1:16 pm on 1 August 2012

Pacific Island countries will get $4.56 million from the New Zealand Government to help them develop valuable export products like cocoa, coffee and vanilla.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Murray McCully, says the money will go to Fairtrade ANZ - a New Zealand and Australian umbrella organisation which promotes fair trade.

Mr McCully says it will help unlock the potential of small Pacific farms to create niche products which could contribute to significant export earnings and employment.

He says there's big demand for high-end food products from the Pacific and getting Fairtrade certification for them, will increase their value.
