Science fiction writer Harry Harrison, author of the doomsday book upon which the film Soylent Green was based, has died aged 87.

The American writer's 1966 novel Make Room! Make Room!, on which the film was based, belonged to his distinctive genre of stories about extraterrestrial life and futuristic worlds.

Many of his books carried warnings of threatening militarism, consumerism and overpopulation.

Soylent Green portrayed a degraded planet in which people volunteered to be euthanised in exchange for glimpses of film that portrayed the lost world of nature.
