Gunmen in Pakistan attacked one of the country's main air bases, at Kamra, near the capital, Islamabad, before dawn on Thursday. The ensuing fighting lasted several hours.

Rocket-propelled grenades fired from outside the base, damaged one aircraft. The attackers then scaled a wall to get inside the base, though they did not reach the hangars there.

Eight were killed, one soldier also died and the base commander was seriously wounded.

All air bases in Pakistan were placed on high alert afterwards.

The Pakistani Taliban said it carried out the attack.

The Mehran naval air base in Karachi was attacked in May 2011, when 10 soldiers were killed. Security forces took about 17 hours to secure the base afterwards.
