US TV host Jay Leno has taken a pay cut to save the jobs of others working on the NBC Tonight Show.

Some 20 people at the popular late night talk show have reportedly lost their jobs as NBC moves to reduce the programme's costs.

Reports suggest Leno's salary will drop by more than $US5 million to $US20 million.

He reportedly takes home another $US15 to $US20 million annually through personal appearances as a stand-up comedian.

Other senior staff on The Tonight Show are also believed to have agreed to pay cuts.

Leno has presented the show since taking over from Johnny Carson in 1992. However, he briefly left in 2009 until March 2010, when he was temporarily replaced by Conan O'Brien.
