Saudi Arabia says a plot linked to al-Qaeda to carry out attacks in the country has been foiled.

The Saudi news agency SPA reported on Sunday that Interior Ministry officials said the plans had reached an advanced stage and the suspects had carried out tests with explosives.

Eight people, two of them Saudis and six Yemenis, have been arrested in Riyadh and Jeddah. Bomb-making equipment was confiscated.

The last known attempted attack in Saudi Arabia was in 2010 when an attempt was made to assassinate Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the head of the security service.
