American songwriter Hal David, who wrote dozens of hits with Burt Bacharach, died in Los Angeles on Saturday from complications from a stroke.

David, 91, and Bacharach wrote a string of hits for Dionne Warwick, including Walk On By. Other songs they co-wrote included Alfie and the original Casino Royale.

David won two Oscars for his work on the soundtrack for the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) - one for best music and the other for the song Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head.

Both awards were shared with Bacharach.

Other hits included: I Say a Little Prayer, Do You Know the Way to San Jose, I'll Never Fall in Love Again, What The World Needs Now is Love and (They Long to Be) Close to You, which is best known from a version by The Carpenters.

Their songs were recorded by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Marty Robbins, Tom Jones and Barbra Streisand.

Bacharach and David also won a Grammy in 1969 for best score for their Broadway musical Promises, Promises.

A star with his name was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in October last year. His parents were immigrants from Austria.
