Girl found hiding among shooting victims

A four-year-old girl has been found hiding inside a car in France in which three bodies were discovered eight hours earlier, police say.

The three are thought to be British - a husband and wife, and a grandmother. They were found near the popular tourist destination of Lake Annecy near the French Alps on Wednesday, the BBC reports.

The girl had been under the legs of one of the women. An older girl from the family was found shot outside the car and is hospital in a critical condition.

A local cyclist had also been killed nearby.

French police say they are shocked and baffled by the brutality of the shooting which happened in the middle of the afternoon.

The younger girl was initially not spotted inside the BMW estate car, as police waited for the arrival of the forensic scientists from Paris.

It was not until about 11pm (local time) that police found out from the family's neighbours at a nearby campsite that the family had a second daughter, and launched a new search involving a helicopter and police dogs.

A murder investigation is now under way, with French forensic teams and ballistics experts at the scene. Some 15 spent cartridges from an automatic pistol have been found.
