The Department of Immigration says the entertainment visa permits Tyson to work temporarily in Australia as part of the Day of the Champions tour in November.
The speaking tour of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide will be the American's first visit to Australia, the ABC reports.
The boxer was sentenced to six years' jail in 1992 for raping 18-year-old Desiree Washington in an Indianapolis hotel room. He served three years.
Last week, Tyson was denied a visa to enter New Zealand to take part in the tour after a charity withdrew its support.
However, he has since applied again and officials are considering the request.
