A New Zealand racehorse won the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in Melbourne on Saturday.

Ocean Park ridden by Glen Boss took the lead 30 metres from the finish of Australia's most prestigious race and won by a neck.

"He just wants to win, he's a winner. Simple as that," Boss said afterwards. "Every time he goes to the races he does a little bit better.

He said the win surpassed Makybe Diva's Cox Plate victory 2005 and rivalled her three Melbourne Cups.

All Too Hard was second and Pierro third.

"We came here with a plan, we stuck to it and it worked," said trainer Gary Hennessy.

"Glen wanted to be the last one to come off the bridle," he said. "It didn't work too bad."

Boss is now the winner of three Cox Plates to match his three Melbourne Cups.

The last New Zealand-bred horse to win the Cox Plate was Sunline in 2005.
