A British MP has been suspended from the Conservative Party for flying to Australia to be part of a celebrity reality television show.

The ABC reports the member for Mid Bedfordshire Nadine Dorries was spotted in a Queensland jungle camp preparing for the series I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

She said she was trying to bring politics to a new audience, but it has not gone down well within her party.

After a day of debate about the role of publicity in politics, Ms Dorries was suspended from the party by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Questioned about the matter on British TV, Home Secretary Theresa May said:

"It's up to each individual MP to decide how they deal with their constituents and what service they give to their constituents," she said.

"Frankly I think an MP's job is in their constituency and in the House of Commons."
