Afghan peace talks to resume

6:02 am on 13 November 2012

Peace talks are set to resume between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban.

President Hamid Karzai has confirmed his representative will meet Taliban officials in the next few weeks.

President Karzai says most of the Taliban are not terrorists and they've been driven off the land by western forces.

And he says the Taliban has a legitimate role to play in a peaceful Afghanistan.

"Let's differentiate between the bad ones and the Afghan ones," he said.

The ABC reports talks between the government and the Taliban stalled after the assassination of Afghanistan's chief negotiator Burhanuddin Rabbani last year. Now Mr Karzai has named Burhanuddin Rabbani's son, Salahuddin Rabbani, as his representative.
