Israeli troops fire on Syrian artillery unit

Israeli troops on the Golan Heights have fired tank shells at a Syrian artillery unit.

It is believed to be the first time in nearly 40 years that Israeli troops have engaged Syrian forces directly.

The ABC reports Syrian government troops are battling rebel forces around a Syrian town close to the Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967.

On the weekend, Israel fired a warning shot when a Syrian shell landed on one of its military outposts overlooking the town.

The military says this time it fired directly at the artillery unit responsible for the latest stray shell and scored a direct hit.

Earlier on Monday, strategic affairs minister Moshe Yaalon said he did not believe President Bashar al-Assad wanted to wage war with Israel, saying it was the last thing the Syrian leader needed as he struggled to maintain his grip on power.
