A man is to appear in court in Sydney next month accused of grooming a friend's daughter in New Zealand and sending her explicit videos and images.

Police say he had sexually explicit conversations with the girl, aged 13, by mobile phone and on social networking sites.

Police say the accused, 40, sent the girl explicit images and videos, and that he knew how young she was because she was the daughter of a family friend.

The matter was forwarded by New Zealand Police to the NSW Police child exploitation internet unit and an arrest was made in Dulwich Hill on Friday.

AAP reports the suspect is charged with using a carriage service to groom a person under 16 years, using a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under 16 years and using a carriage service for child pornography material.

He is due to appear at Newtown Local Court on 4 December.
