Death penalty dropped from anti-gay bill

9:09 am on 24 November 2012

A committee of Ugandan MPs has dropped the death penalty from a new law against homosexuality.

One of them says the bill has been endorsed by the committee, but the death penalty clause has been removed.

The BBC reports homosexual acts are illegal in Uganda - this bill increases the penalties. It proposes longer jail terms for homosexual acts, including a life sentence in certain circumstances.

The original bill also prohibited the promotion of gay rights.

Foreign donors have threatened to cut aid if gay rights are not respected.
