UK stance on status of Palestine at UN

Britain says it not oppose a Palestinian bid for a diplomatic upgrade at the United Nations if it is assured that the Palestinians will return to peace talks and won't pursue Israel through the International Criminal Court.

The United Nations General Assembly is due to hold a vote on Thursday on an upgrade of Palestinian status to observer state from observer entity.

A growing list of European countries back an upgrade for the Palestinians to non-member status at the UN, but Germany says it won't back the bid.

The BBC says the vote is seen as a symbolic milestone in Palestinian ambitions for statehood.
