The Spanish parliament has passed a tough austerity budget for next year, in an effort to fix the finances of the eurozone's fourth largest economy.

Some government departments will have their spending cut by 20%, with science, education and health among most seriously affected, the BBC reports.

There have been a series of protests against the cuts.
