Riot police and looters clash in Buenos Aires

5:59 am on 23 December 2012

Riot police in Argentina have clashed with hundreds of people who tried to loot a supermarket in the outskirts of the capital Buenos Aires.

The police fired tear gas and rubber bullets and managed to prevent the attack.

But other shops were looted and more than 200 people were arrested in other parts of Argentina on the second day of looting and rioting.

The government accused unions linked to the opposition of orchestrating the unrest in an attempt to undermine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
