'Hobbit' on top again

[The Hobbit was top of the box office in the United States and Canada for a second consecutive weekend with $US37.6 million in ticket sales.

Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise was second with $US15.6 million.

This is 40, an adult comedy was third with $US12 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Domestic ticket sales for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey fell by about 57%. Movie receipts typically drop 40% - 60% each week.

In international markets, Hobbit sales reached $US284 million, bringing the movie's global revenues to $US434 million, Warner Bros. said.

"The Hobbit" is the first of three movies based on a fantasy novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, a forerunner to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

New movies starting on Tuesday range from Django Unchained, a western by Quentin Tarantino, Les Miserables, a musical, and Parental Guidance, a comedy.
