Woman in court over US shooting charity scam

7:46 am on 29 December 2012

A New York woman has allegedly cheated donors who gave money after the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut by posing as the aunt of a child who died.

Nouel Alba was arrested after the FBI accused her of using Facebook, phone calls and text messages to solicit donations to what she called a funeral fund, the BBC reports.

Gunman Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six staff at Sandy Hook elementary school, and his mother and himself, on 14 December.

It's unclear how many people gave money to Ms Alba, but all the donations have now been refunded.

The 37-year-old appeared on Thursday in federal court in Hartford, Connecticut and was released on $US50,000 bail. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison.
