Wettest year for England in more than a century

England has already experienced its wettest year on record and more rain is to come before the New Year.

The UK Met Office has confirmed that even with three days still to go, 2012 has been the wettest year since records began in 1910.

Up to Thursday, total average rainfall was 1095.8mm across England. The figure surpassed the previous record of 1093.3mm in 2000.

Heavy downpours are also forecast for this weekend, AAP reports

Forecasters say it is possible more than 100mm will fall before January 1, as England's soggy festive season continues.

A Met Office spokesperson said the soggy weather was largely due to the shifting jet-stream pattern.
