More toxic canisters found in Queensland

10:00 am on 31 December 2012

A third canister containing aluminium phosphide has washed up on a beach in central Queensland. The chemical can be fatal if inhaled.

AAP reports one was located on Lady Elliot Island on 10 December, a second was discovered at Rules Beach and a third was reported to police at Deep Creek south of Gladstone on Sunday morning.

Four canisters were washed up along 200km of coastline from Ayr - Ingham since February.

Police are re-issuing a warning for beachgoers to avoid the canisters. AAP reports the chemical they contain is used to fumigate ships.

Aluminium phosphide generates phosphine gas when it comes into contact with air or moisture and can also self-ignite in certain conditions.
