Solomon Islands police station burnt down

1:04 pm on 6 January 2013

Fire has destroyed a police station on the Weather Coast on the island of Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands.

The station was built by the international security mission, RAMSI, which was led by Australia but had strong New Zealand support.

Radio New Zealand's correspondent in Honiara, George Atkin, says police are blaming an arson attack.

The incident occurred at the village of Babanakira, which was at the centre of ethnic violence just over a decade ago that killed dozens of people and left tens of thousands homeless.

The village was also the base of the jailed warlord, Harold Keke.

George Atkin says two men from Babanakira, who were serving life sentences for murder during the ethnic tension, recently escaped from jail and might have haded back to their home town.
