New Berlin airport further delayed

6:30 am on 8 January 2013

The opening of a new airport for Berlin has been further delayed, until 2014 at the earliest. It was originally meant to open in early 2012.

The new airport is destined to take over from the ageing Tegel and Schoenefeld airports. Berlin Brandenburg airport will eventually handle up to 27 million passengers per year.

But a series of technical problems have caused delays. In June last year, it transpired that the site's fire system was not ready. This time the problem is due to baggage handling systems

The BBC reports the cost of the project has also risen, from the initial 2 billion eurosto more than 4 billion ($US5.3 billion) so far.
