No need for flooding investigation - Samoa PM

The prime minister of Samoa says there is no need for an investigation into flooding caused by cyclone Evan.

The storm in December caused major flooding, wrecked buildings and destroyed crops before moving on to batter Fiji.

Local media are reporting claims that flooding along the Vaimauga River was the result of the Electric Power Corporation's Alaoa Dam being left open.

But Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said the damage is not isolated to that area, and an investigation is unnecessary.

He said the damage was due to the large volume of fast-moving water which flowed down the river, bringing trees with it, and bursting open the dam.
