A baby born on Tuesday night in Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney will remain there indefinitely despite being an Australian citizen and his mother having been deemed a genuine refugee.
The child is named Paartheepan, which means "lighting of the world" in the Tamil language.
The baby's mother, Ranjini, is among a group of 50 refugees who are being held in detention because they failed assessments by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
None of the group has been given a reason for their imprisonment, which continues in spite of a successful High Court challenge to their status.
Ranjini, who has two other children with her at the Villawood detention centre, gave birth at a hospital in Sydney on Tuesday night.
The ABC reports she has decided to keep the baby with her even though he is allowed to leave.
