Hospital staff in Venezuela say at least 50 people have been killed and many more injured during a prison riot in the city of Barquisimeto, in the west of the country.
The prison minister, Iris Varela, says the violence was triggered when soldiers went to the prison to search for weapons.
The dead included inmates, guards and workers at the prison.
