An 18-year-old man has been found exhausted and dehydrated in dense bush nine weeks after he was reported missing by his family.

Police said he was last seen leaving his home at Westleigh, in the north of Sydney, on 27 November.

Police conducted extensive searches for the missing man and serious concerns were held for his welfare, AAP reports.

On Saturday evening two hikers went to Hornsby Police Station to report seeing a disorientated man in dense bushland off Elouera Road in Westleigh.

A land and air search by police and emergency services personnel located the man and he was winched out by a rescue helicopter.

He was rushed to Hornsby Hospital suffering exposure-related injuries, including exhaustion and dehydration.

Police said it was believed he was in the bush the entire nine weeks he was missing.
