Fatal safety drill

Five crew members died after a lifeboat fell from a cruise ship docked in the port of Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands.

The incident happened on the Majesty on Sunday during a routine safety drill. The boat fell more than 20 metres into the sea after cables snapped.

The ship is registered in Malta and owned by Louis Cruises of Cyprus.

Three of the dead were Indonesians. The others were a Filipino and a Ghanaian.

The BBC reports no passengers were inolved in the tragedy.
