The New Zealand singer Kimbra has won a major Grammy for her duet with the Australian singer Gotye. Their hit song "Somebody That I Used to Know" has been named record of the year.

At the 55th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles Gotye accepted the award from Prince, who said "I love this song" just before he announced the winner.

The song has topped the singles chart in 18 countries since its Australian release in July 2011.

The pair have also been named best pop duo, while Gotye won the award for best alternative music album.

Last year Kimbra was named best female artist at the Australian music awards, the Arias, for the second consecutive year.

On American music's biggest night of the year, the Grammy for song of the year has gone to the pop trio Fun for "We Are Young".

British singer Adele, who swept the Grammys last year with six major awards, landed another this year: best pop solo performance for her live rendition of "Set Fire to The Rain."

Only a handful of winners are announced during the three-hour live telecast. More than 60 categories were announced before the show went to air.
