Police in the United States have confirmed that a charred body found in the cabin where where a gunman made his last stand on Tuesday is that of the fugitive former officer Christopher Dorner.

A six-day hunt for Mr Dorner ended when the police surrounded the cabin near the ski resort of Big Bear in California and fired pyrotechnic tear-gas canisters.

The 33-year-old was suspected of killing three people in a vendetta against the Los Angeles Police Department after he was sacked in 2008, the BBC reports.

He is reported to have barricaded himself in the cabin before exchanging gunfire with officers, one of whom he killed.

A single gunshot was later heard inside the building, which then began to burn.
