The number of people in New South Wales with dementia is predicted to increase by 20% in seven years.

Figures prepared for Alzheimer's Australia by the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare show there are an estimated 109,000 people with dementia in NSW.

AAP reports their number is predicted to increase by 20% to about 132,000 by 2020.

Alzheimer's Australia NSW chief executive John Watkins said the figures are alarming.

More than 320,000 Australians have dementia. It's predicted the number will rise to more than half a million by 2030.
