Lion slaughter warning

7:21 pm on 7 March 2013

Scientists predict that nearly half of Africa's lions could be wiped out within the next 20 to 40 years.

A study published in Ecology Letters said fewer than 30,000 lions remain and their territories have shrunk to a quarter of their original size as the human population has expanded.

The researchers said separating wild lions from the places where people live could be their only hope of survival, the BBC reports.

Many lions have been shot by farmers because they threaten livestock.
