Six rare paintings have been stolen from a house in the western suburbs of Adelaide, including an original canvas by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a French Impressionist.

Police said thieves forced their way through the front door of the house at Brooklyn Park some time between 1.30pm - 3pm (ACDT) on Wednesday.

As well as the Renoir, the ABC reports other works were by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt.
