EU parliament rejects budget deal

The European parliament has - by a large majority - rejected a deal on the next seven-year European Union budget, which was agreed by national leaders last month.

The parliamentarians say the budget is not acceptable in its current form.

After fraught negotiations in February, it was agreed that the budget for the years 2014 to 2020 should be cut by more than 3%.

EU leaders are meeting in Brussels for a summit which correspondents say will be dominated by the Union's economic problems.
