China's rubber-stamp parliament has confirmed Li Keqiang as premier.

Mr Li, who already holds the number two spot in the Communist Party, takes over from Wen Jiabao.

He has been elected for a five-year term but, like his predecessor, will be expected to spend a decade in office.

Mr Li's elevation was confirmed by 3000 legislators at the National People's Congress, the annual parliament session, in Beijing, the BBC reports.

Xi Jinping was confirmed as the new president the previous day.
