Vanuatu PM resigns before no-confidence vote

9:55 pm on 21 March 2013

The Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Sato Kilman, who was facing a vote of no-confidence has resigned before the vote could be held.

The Speaker has told Parliament a caretaker administration, led by Mr Kilman, will run the country until next Thursday when MPs will meet to elect a new prime minister.

The Opposition leader, Edward Natapei, had claimed earlier this week that he had the numbers to vote Mr Kilman out of office - a claim Mr Kilman did not dispute.
