UN agencies appeal to politicians over Syria

8:10 pm on 17 April 2013

The heads of five United Nations humanitarian agencies have appealed to political leaders to use their influence to end the violence in Syria.

In a highly unusual statement, the humanitarian chiefs say there's an insufficient sense of urgency among the governments and parties that could put a stop to the carnage, the BBC reports.

Collective frustration and anguish spurred the leaders of the five UN agencies to take the unusual step of making a direct public appeal to world powers for political intervention to end what they called "Syria's horrendous crisis".

The appeal reflects the sense of impotence amongst those who deal with the costs of the tragedy, faced by overwhelming human needs and a security council hamstrung by division.

The aid organisations are also facing a serious shortage of funds to help the 5.5 million people in Syria and neighbouring countries who've been affected by the conflict.
