Police in Brazil have occupied three shanty towns in Rio de Janeiro.
The occupation is part of a government policy of combating drug crime ahead of the upcoming World Cup and Olympics.
Pope Francis is also due to visit during Catholic celebrations for World Youth Day in July.
All three slum districts - Cerro-Cora, Vila Candido and Guararapes - are on the hillsides around the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer.
No clashes were reported as more than 400 officers entered the favelas before dawn on Monday.
After marching in, the security forces searched the favelas for drugs and weapons. The BBC reports ammunition, radio transmitters and marijuana were found.
